چکیده

Even though cotton originates from hot and dry climates, plant growth and yield reductions still occur when water supply is limited or interrupted. Extensive research has been conducted on the physiological and metabolic effects of waterdeficit stress on the vegetative parts of the plant; however, little attention has been given to the metabolic responses of the cotton flower under water limiting conditions. Since reproductive units are severely affected by water deficits, further research is needed to elucidate the metabolic responses of cotton reproductive units under conditions of water stress in order to facilitate methods of amelioration. In this study, it was hypothesized that water-deficit stress would severely impair gas exchange functions consequently resulting in perturbation of carbohydrates of cotton reproductive units.

Evaluation of macroscopic water extraction model for salinity and water stress in saffron yield production

Water scarcity and salinity are important limitations for saffron (Crocus sativus L.) production in arid and semi-arid regions. The purpose of this research was to study the interaction effects of water salinity and deficit irrigation on the macroscopic water extraction model for saffron. The effect of salinity and water stress on root-water uptake coefficient was determined by additive and mul...

Investigating critical growth stage of cotton subject to water deficit stress . Fiaz Ahmad*, Shabab Ud Din, Asia Perveen and Mohammad Naveed Afzal

Critical growth stage of cotton crop was investigated by artificially imposing water stress under field conditions. The crop was given water deficit stress for a period of 30 days at squaring (SS) and first boll split (BS) phases by maintaining the leaf water potential (yw) at –2.2+0.2 MPa whereas in control plots yw was maintained at -1.6+ 0.2 MPa by irrigation scheduling. The average irrigati...

The impact of drought stress at different stages of development on water relations, stomatal density and quality changes of rapeseed (Brassica napus L.)

ABSTRACT- To investigate the effect of draught stress on water relations, stomatal density, chlorophyll content and yield of rapeseed, an experiment was done with four levels of drought stress including L1 (Field Capacity, FC), L2 (70% Available Water Content, AWC), L3 (50% AWC), and L4 (30% AWC), within three growth stages- including stem elongation (T1), onset of flowering (T2) and silique fo...

Response of Marigold Flower Yield and Yield Components to Water Deficit Stress and Nitrogen Fertilizer

In order to study the effect of water deficit stress and different nitrogen levels on flower yield, yield components and water use efficiency of Calendula officinalis L., an experiment was conducted as split plot based on randomized complete block design with three replications, at research field of Islamic Azad University, Birjand branch in 2009. In this experiment, irrigation treatments (irri...

Evaluation of Physiological Responses of Tuberose (Polianthes tuberosa L.) to Water Deficit Stress

Water stress is one of the main factors of severe damage and limitation of plant production in Iran. The paper reports a pot experiment conducted by using a factorial experiment based on a completely randomized design with three replications (each replication composed of four pots) to compare the physiological and biochemical characteristics of two varieties of tuberose (double- and single-flow...
